This will not be your „normal" Ashtanga Yoga class. It is intended to be an intensive burst of time to return to the roots, to the essence, to the beginnings of this great practice we call Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. We will be using the classical Ashtanga Yoga sequence as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, South India
Vinyasa is a way to get from where you are to some other place. It involves a gradual, step-by-step, approach. The idea there is that there is almost nothing that you cannot do, if you go slowly enough. That does not mean that we are trying to go slow. We do though need to go slow enough, to get us from where we are, to where we want to go. That is how we can learn best.
We will start the first day with some mental work, to establish a common vocabulary and to understand the deeper intent of the classical yoga practices. This will not be a race through many sequences of postures, and in the long run it will help you to learn how to move through those sequences better.
I hope you come. I guarantee, these 5 days will give you tools to improve your practice for a lifetime of healthy and fun practice.
First day we will start with a kind of ‘orientation’ and then get into practical work of practice. In the following days we have Morning Practice and then a break followed by an afternoon ‘clinic’ with time for Q&A and a kind of lab to help improve what we are doing in the mornings.
10AM – 12.30PM
Conducted Style with a focus on finding Samasthiti in every pose. We will start slowly and go in deep, developing a common vocabulary and an understanding of basic alignment. Protective actions (bandhas) will be taught to create stability, elongation and a healthy range of motion. The objective is to learn a sustainable way, for a long life time of practice.
Day by day we will work our way further through the Ashtanga Yoga sequence.
The focus will be less on how far or how fast we go but rather on understanding the essential inner forms that are always present in every part of this great practice. Knowing those essential inner forms you can find your way in any part of the practice, in any series, any style.
2PM – 5PM
We will start after our lunch break with an opportunity for questions and answers, and time to digest our lunch and to investigate what we learned in the morning.
Challenges observed in the Morning Practice will be opened up and explored in a way not possible in a regularly paced class.
Bring your questions, an open mind and a willingness to look at this great practice in a new way.
